The Constabulary Medal
The force's award for pre-eminent valour and bravery, and its Roscommon recipients
The Constabulary Medal was established by Circular number 182, dated 15th April 1842, by the Inspector General, D. McGregor, of the Irish Constabulary, and approved by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The medal was silver, with a “light blue Ribband”.
The Royal Irish Constabulary Code of 1911 outlines at paragraph 1545 that when a member of the Force in the performance of police duty displayed pre-eminent valour and bravery, in addition to any other reward he might receive, a silver medal would be conferred on him, suspended by a light green ribbon. Holders of Constabulary Medals were designated in official reports by the word “Medal” after their name or signature.
